by Joy Scafide, LDA Co-Director

Materials Needed:

Large Pot

Small Pot (black or terra cotta)

Large Rock

Pebbles

Potting Soil

Twigs

3-7" length

3-4" length

Twine

Moss

Glue gun and glue*

Scissors

Succulents (optional)

*adult help needed

Step 1

Fill the large pot about three quarters full with potting soil. Nestle the small pot into the soil so that the mouth will stick up above the top lip of the large pot to form the empty tomb. Continue filling the large pot with soil, mounding the soil in the back so that only the opening of the small pot is visible.

Step 2

Set the large rock in place slightly covering the front of the small pot. If using succulents, tuck them into the soil around the sides and back of the small pot.

Step 3

Next, have an adult make the crosses using your twigs and twine. With the glue gun, glue one small twig about 2" down from the top of a large twig to form a cross. Wrap the twine around the center to cover the glue and tie in a knot on the back of the cross. Trim the ends of the twine. Repeat this two more times to form three crosses.

Step 4

Add the pebbles around the opening of the small pot. Place the moss as needed to cover the soil, Push the crosses into the soil behind the small pot. Set in place, water when dry and enjoy throughout the Easter season!

Let’s Talk

While creating your Resurrection Garden, use the time to reflect with one another about Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and the significance of the empty tomb. If you're with children, challenge older ones to memorize a verse like Matthew 28:6. Ask them why it's so important to our faith that the tomb is empty. If you have toddlers, keep it simple by asking them to look for Jesus in the tomb. When they don't see Him, excitedly tell them it's empty!
